I am planning to buy a laptop which I can use for live karaoke shows and DJ and connect it to a PA system. I have been using a desktop with a good sound card but it's too bulkyy to carry with me for shows etc.

Most laptop cards are easily good enough for professional audio output. 44Khz goes way Beyond the scope of human hearing. 48Khz more so. Try using ASIO drivers for your laptop soundcard. They improve the responsiveness no end. If you still want a better soundcard then best go for a Creative Labs external one. They rock!
Just go to the Creative Labs Soundblaster or Audigy web page and have a look. They connect via the USB port. That's the only way to extend the laptops sound quality as You cannot just change the soundcard like you can with a desktop.
