Hair provides protection from sun, snow and rain. It also keeps the head warm. Also, it attracts the opposite sex.
White people don't have enough melanin (produced by melanocytes) to live in the tropics; instead, they produce less melanin in order to absorb more sunlight to produce vitamin D, which is useful in darker, greyer, cold climates (like much of Europe).
