Question by Ben Wade: How to preserve crustacean shell for display?
While canoeing I found a dead horseshoe crab floating in water so I took it home as I wanted to preserve it for display. I removed the rotton inside of the crab and left the shell to dry under the sun. It's now dried but some tissues are still stuck to the shell (rock hard!) and it smells of preserved salt fish. What can I do to preserve it for display and kill the smell?

Sometimes ago I read that you should bury these shells in your garden for about 4 weeks. In this time ants and other carrion feeders remove every smelling organic material. I never checked out, but it could work.

Another possibility is, after cleaning it mechanically with a brush, to put it overnight into such a denture cleaning solution.

To try a mixture of household ammonia and H2O2-solution 10% could work, but it bleaches, smells and is dangerous ( caustic ).
