I've been seeing these HD DVD Upconversion players all over the place and are ALOT cheaper than an HD DVD player. What's the difference? I own an HD compatible TV. Does that have anything to do with it?

Pretty much, the difference is the price. I got a DVD that upconverts to HD from Walmart for less than $ 40 including the HDMI cable. (You have to use an HDMI cable for any type of HD, whether it's upconverting or solid HD)
I have also used a High Def DVD player on my TV with no difference to speak of. So save yourself some money and get the DVD player that upconverts
The link will take you to the one I have. It is a Magnavox and works just excellent! and, it's even a little lower in price now. Keep in mind, HDMI cables can cost upwards of $ 30, but for $ 34.88 you can get the player along with the HDMI cable.
