I burnt pictures onto the CD-R to save them and it doesn't play the pictures in my dvd player. So if I burned pictures onto a DVD-R disc would it play in my dvd player? I want to be able to play it on my dvd player AND [if i happens to erase on my computer] redownload them onto a file in my computer.

The problem is you're not using a compatible format with your DVD player. DVD players can read CD-Rs, but they will not recognize all the formats.
